Description: The Literary Map is a globe-based interactive micro-site that visualizes 798 acclaimed 20th-21st century literary fiction authors, plotted by place of birth. Commissioned by Hammock Mag, an Indian literary publication known for thematic and geographic reading lists, the site emerged from a need to organize their growing archive of unstructured author metadata and book recommendations.

The interface places discovery at the center. Visitors can rotate the globe, zoom into clusters, apply filters (gender, continent, awards, language, era), search for specific authors or books, or use the “Feeling Lucky” feature for serendipitous finds. As filters are applied, patterns and absences become visible: showing not only who is represented, but who’s missing. This makes the site both a tool for exploration and a subtle commentary on literary bias in global awards and publishing.

Designed to be responsive across five breakpoints, the site offers a seamless experience across devices without sacrificing detail or usability. Achieving this level of responsiveness, especially for a 3D, interaction-dense, map-based interface, posed a significant technical challenge that required careful design and performance optimization.
